State reminds homeowners to register for Basic STAR

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has announced that more than half of the eligible homeowners in New York state have registered for their Basic STAR exemptions.

Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox reminds homeowners that they must register with New York State even though they initially applied for Basic STAR with their local assessors.

Seniors receiving Enhanced STAR are not affected by the registration. They will continue to apply annually or participate in the Income Verification Program.

Over 50 percent of Basic STAR recipients in the local and surrounding counties of Herkimer, Hamilton and Oneida counties have currently registered.

In Herkimer county, 55 percent of the 12,442 Basic STAR recipients have registered; in Hamilton county, 56 percent of 1,136 have registered; and in Oneida couty, 63 percent of 42,323 have registered.

The registration deadline is December 31, 2013.
