Adirondack Kids Day returning to Inlet; plenty of activities planned for Saturday

Adirondack Kids Day, a day-long event that celebrates the outdoor activities described in the Adirondack Kids series of books, will be held at various locations throughout Inlet on Saturday, October 5th.

The event is inspired by the best-selling book series by Gary and Justin VanRiper, and its major sponsor is the Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks.

The day begins with a Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Inlet Emergency Services Building, sponsored by the Inlet School’s PTP in support of the children’s ski program.

The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under.

Throughout the day authorities in outdoor recreation will be sharing their expertise in paddling, hiking and knot tying.

Representatives from the Wild Center in Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake’s new Adirondack Carousel will be on-site.

Also in attendance will be representatives from the Word of Life youth camp of Schroon Lake who will bring along a petting zoo, a bouncy house and an inflatable obstacle course.

There will be a fishing derby for children 12 and under who are accompanied by an adult. Sign-up is available at French Louis’ ADK Sports.

You can learn to draw at the Inlet Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon with Joyce Snavlin and Linda Davis Reed, authors/illustrators of Adirondack ABC’s.

Also, face painting will be offered by children’s book illustrator, Maggie Henry.

Magician Jim Oakey will perform two shows at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Cindy Page will bring along a Barred, Screech and Eagle Owl and offer a presentation on owl rehabilitation at 11 a.m.

Keep a look-out for Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and other Adirondack Park friends who will also be in attendance.

For those interested in playing a round of mini-golf at the Putterfingers course, there will be opportunities to win an autographed book from the Adirondack Kids series.

A Children’s Authors & Illustrators Book Fair will be held under a large tent at The Adirondack Reader from noon to 3 p.m. The fair will feature more than a dozen authors and illustrators, most with books set in the Adirondacks.

Stop by the Kiwanis Information Booth at Chambers Commons for a complete schedule of events and a free goody bag (while supplies last.)
