The event is inspired by the best-selling book series by Gary and Justin VanRiper, and its major sponsor is the Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks.

The VanRipers, a father-and-son writing team from Camden, created and launched

The Adirondack Kids® books in 2001.

The books’ story lines revolve around three best friends who are growing up in the Fulton Chain of Lakes area of the Adirondacks, with Inlet as their home base.

There are now 13 books in the series with more than 100,000 copies sold.

Organizers for Adirondack Kids Day describe the event as kid-friendly, with activities planned all day long—rain or shine—for the entire family.

Authorities in outdoor recreation will be sharing their expertise throughout the day in such areas as paddling, hiking and knot tying.

Representatives from the Wild Center in Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake’s new Adirondack Carousel are also scheduled to attend.KD2

Face painting will be offered by children’s book illustrator, Maggie Henry, and a visit is

expected by Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and other Adiron-dack Park friends.

For those interested in playing a round of mini-golf at the Putterfingers course, there will be opportunities to win an autographed book from the Adiron-dack Kids series.

Folks can learn to draw at the Inlet Public Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the guidance of Joyce Snavlin and Linda Davis Reed, authors/illustrators of Adirondack ABC’s.

Magician Jim Oakey will perform two shows at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The hub of the event will be a Children’s Authors & Illustrators Book Fair which will be held under a large tent at The Adiron-dack Reader from noon to 3 p.m.

The fair will feature more than a dozen authors and illustrators, most with books set in the Adirondacks.

Special guest children’s authors include Syracuse News Channel 9 co-anchor Christie Casciano and her sister, Rose Mary; Diane Chase, author of the Adirondack Family Time guidebooks; and the Adirondack Kids’ authors and illustrator team of Justin, Carol and Gary VanRiper.

Local author Anne Phinney will also be present to talk about her new book, “Finding My Way to Moose River Farm: Living with Animals in the Adirondacks.”

“We are so honored that Kiwanis of the Central Adiron-dacks and the community of Inlet has been so receptive and supportive of The Adirondacks Kids®. We hope what happens this day will encourage and inspire many more families to explore and enjoy this special region, creating memories to last a lifetime and traditions to last for generations as it has for our family,” Gary said.
