Plein Air artists produce 52 paintings over weekend for View auction

View’s Plein Air Paint Out event brought in 38 artists from around New York state who sat through rain and sun and produced 52 pieces of artwork over the Labor Day weekend.

On Friday and Saturday, August 30 and 31, artists spread out over the area to paint iconic downtown scenes such as Slickers and the Old Forge Dam, and natural settings including the Moose and Black Rivers.

All 52 pieces sold at the auction that was held at View on Sunday afternoon. Over 120 people were in attendance to bid on the pieces with winning bids ranging from $100 to $2,000.

Consignment pieces were also on sale over the weekend, some by artists who participated in the Plein Air event.

View Exhibi-tions Manager Cory Card said the event was a big success, exceeding last year’s total of funds raised.

Some of the more well known participating artists included Katherine O’Neil, Martha Deming, Claire Mann, Gordy Bashant and Joyce Hanson.

Dayton Jones painted three downtown scenes over the course of the weekend. One was of the Strand, titled “Movies and Food”; one of the mailboat, titled “Dry Dock”; and another of the tour boat, titled “Clearwater at Rest.”

Jones was beaten out in terms of number of paintings completed by Joanne Quinlivan who painted four paintings for the auction.

Card extended his thanks to sponsor Montezuma Winery all the volunteers who made the event possible, in particular Terry Rozycki, Michele deCamp, Paula Weal, Margo Boylan and all those in the kitchen as well. He also acknowledged Linda Weal, past exhibitions manager, who returned to View for the event and all of the participating artists.

Card, in his new position for only a few weeks, helped with handling the artwork and worked with the artists. He will be fully in charge of next year’s event that goes into the planning stage next week.
