Athletes come to Old Forge for second annual triathlon

This intermediate distance triathlon featured a 1000m swim, 22-mile bike trek, and a four-mile run. Matt Migonis of Hamilton won first place overall, Travis Kuhl of Lowville came in second, with Keith Murray from Wynantskill coming in third.

Migonis’ local win directly follows his August 11 win at the USA Triathlon Sprint Nationals in Milwaukee, WI.

Mike Brych, president and director of ATC Endurance, said that including the relay division, just over 300 athletes took part in this year’s event, up from 175 last year. Brych said there was a very positive momentum coming from last year and noted that a lot of locals turned out to participate.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“The cooperation we got from locals and the police and fire departments was outstanding,” he said.

Racers came from all over the country, with a number of them coming from New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Six racers came from Canada.

Brych said ATC likes to bring events that appeal to the masses but at the same time appeal to the high end athletes.

The Old Forge Triathlon is the fifth and final competition offered by ATC this summer, following similar events in Cooperstown and Delta Lake.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
